Some Vintage frippery....

I had collected one or two (or three....) new old bits over the past few weeks
and it is only fair to share.
Two stunning new cookery pots which i am thrilled to pieces with.
Who knew that pots would be soooo pretty, they never go in the cupboard!?
Vintage enamel (oh Lordy, i do love my enamel) WITH lids!
In proper good condition. I applaud the older generation any persons! who know how to Make Do & Mend.
A retro red and flower power deep blue - boil me happy :)
£7 each, one from the Brackley Antiques Centre and t'other from ebay....
(ebay being harder to buy from and find a bargain me feels)
The JOY of Spring Tulips in a Syrup tin. 2 large bunches for £5.00 so mixed and matched 2 lots in 2 different rooms in the home. They lasted a good week and yes! "i'm worth it" xxx
(who else is going to buy me flowers?)
So Bloomin chuffed to find this GIANT bread bin on ebay too.
In RED
with huge stencilled letters
it is a giant!!
And i got it for a song £8 there is stilll ebay joy to be found... sometimes.
And (MrsB) i have found the only chair that is EVER going to fit in my tiny kitchen.
A retro stool in yummy Bloomsbury Green - it is a hit with all the kids (young and old) who find themselves pulled into the kitchen with a Tea Mug thrust in their hand and a tale to tell.... coz it spins round too and goes up and down (but don't tell my 7yr old it goes up and down, she has yet to discover this and is still obsessing with the amusing spin facility, pity please to my fraying nerves)
Aaaaaahhhh,
and with all this crazy training i am doing - the need to cook and EAT is intense.
I might kill another human being who happend to come between me and my morning pancakes right now.

p.s. i have the BIG SALE DAY coming up soon!!!
so plenty of posts about, what will be available and all the offers to get excited about.
: D

Winner * Winner * Winner... of Pip Lincolne's gorgeous new book

It is Sunday... and i was just about to walk the dog....
then i thought, i shall draw this GIVEAWAY Winner now, or it will never happen!
 So: *drum rrroooolllllll*
It is YOU Joanne - http://rosedahlia.blogspot.com/ - from this place here
and Jo has 2 sons and a daughter and has been finding the time to do some very cool Christmas Crafting.
She shames us that she can find the time! Please go and see her amazing knitted NOEL letters. I am in awe of her talents.
I do not *know* Jo so it all Legit. like. But i know her now :)
Well Done my Lovely and i do wish everyone could win it though.

And i thought i would stuff this little lot in to show you something new and wacky i made t'other week...
It is a felt 'Paper Chain'
and i find it so amusing that my business is actually called PaperFish,
there is very VERY little to do with paper in anything i do....
Even my paperchain is felt!
This was hugely time consuming and it took me around 2 hours to complete a piece of chain barely over 2 metres long. Tcha, but it was very satisfying!
I might try some more colourways and styles.

Ya know, i have so much more to talk to you all about.
2012 is going to be so big for me. So special. i can just feel it!
And i am so grateful that people pop in, read for a bit, enter the giveaways and like sharing all this stuff too. ThankU xxx

Tomte / Tomten... warning: could be addictive!

Some of you will be thinking "what the foolhardiness is Tomte all about?"
Some of you will be saying "oooohhh i love the Tomten!"
Think: Gnomes, Scandinavia, Nordic, small Elven folk
If you like the Moomins and the such - you'll love this colourway / this theme.
I have just ordered this: The Tomten - Astrid Lindgren; Hardcover
She wrote Pippi Langstrumpf

and so begins yet another brief obsession.
I am going to try and dress in these colours over the Winter and fully embrace my inner Scandinavian.
**wish i had the long blonde hair and even longer legs**
Think of me in my mock Pine Cabin, as the snow gently falls, wearing my knitted Reindeer jumper
"yurder hooden janksisit faaa"
And my home thus decorated in Red, Grey & White
NOT content with yet another Button Wreath in, yet another amazing colourway...
i decide to make myself a matching Button Bouquet for the Sitting Room.
EEeeeeek - i was terribly happy with myself about this :)
*rosy glow*
Displaying my bouquet took a few minutes of titivating.
I had no vase small enough so i used a vintage Milk Bottle and pushed it full of matching Felt balls...
And finished it with some snowy pom-pom trim and a big red bell.
It really is the simple things that colour a lady happy
and you'll see what  mean...
The Balls, i have been selling in a Tomte set for a long time
and i do intend to make a matching garland with some of these - if i don't sell out already
*sigh*
i know it looks like i spent all day messing about in tomte world today
but i did do other things too....

For the Love of Citrus fruits, being Homely & Flat Caps...

"You have been quiet since the turn of 2011 Kirsty... what's been going on in 'da hood'?
Are you ill? introspective? struggling a little to cope with the minutiae of daily life?..."
All of the above it seems! and then some more.
So when life is feeling a bit 'too much to bear' i tend to get domestic. I *think* my philosophy is to 'Hunker down' / get back to the basics. In essence, to start again from the bottom up and see if i can feel better.

I am not a saint and i did go to the (not sooo local) kitchen shop ABRAXAS in Weedon.
If i ever have like-minded friends to stay, it is somewhere i like to take them. A treat of a shop for dreaming and dribbling in. OF Cooouuurrrse, nobody needs 'special things' to cook with. I can SEW my own "Bouquet Garni Bags" etc... and so on but i am trying to treat myself so i feel no guilt in this commercial endeavour.
I bought this lovely PINK whisk too. It is all rubbery in feel. Very satisfying. Now that i DID need and would rather purchase anew than save from the skip / carboot.

I love to get all my bowls and equipment out ready...
i got all the fruits from a local independant Greengrocers via my trip to the cookware shop (extra Brownie points?) they are cheaper and friendly and superior quality.
I spent a few days in and out of the kitchen making Lemon Cordial and Marmalade, aswell as Candid Peel (waste not, want not)
I have no tried and tested methods for either - i am too young and impulsive to belong to any club involving 'secret recipes'. I used an internet recipe for the Lemon Cordial, and i am gald i did. It was a superb method which made me use lots of the peel from 12 lemons and save it as 'Candid Peel' - a sort of sugary treat. It tastes A-mazing!! and the cordial is the finest / strongest / perfectly not too sweet recipe i  ever made. Very happy.
It came out quite brown and caramelised looking but has since lightend with maturity and looks far more like it's Lemony self again now. I made many! - one or two glass bottles i purchased a while back but most bottles i have saved from family and friends and the pub and that.
Then the o-so-satisfying process of PRESERVING in any which way or form.
Delight.
You need smell-o-vision here for sure friends.
Is there much in life that is more beautiful a sight than a bowl full of lemons or a pan full of Seville Oranges? i think not.
(oh Lordy - it's that tracksuit again. I am beginning to feel that it has become sealed to my chest.... how can i rid myself of it's comfort... it has....wait for it.... a.... FLEECY INSIDE!... i am doomed...MrsB???)
 Now that marmalade....
i have used 3 differing recipes over the years.  i have finally concluded WHAT it is iam doing that prevents me from getting the marmalade to the right consistency. I won't bore you with my marma-experiments but it has a great deal to do with the fact i don't like mine all peely and fleshy / pulpy so i *think* i am lacking pectin in the pan.... it's a theory.
And honestly, it tastes pretty good - but is not a patch on last years batch.
I must make notes on 'why' etc... then i might make it really well next year?
Do you want to know what went into the jar also?
A few strands of that lemon Candid Peel from the previous day (how cunning can a Fish be?) and a Star Anise (for the Major)
Country pursuits - Preserves and Flat Caps.
I smell of lemons with a hint of ginger and just a touch of fleece.
I am no city girl.
I am no domestic goddess.
I am tired and feeling un-anchored.
A little cooking and a great deal of walking is the very restorative that i need.

Button Frenzy... Sale News...

So, i have begun re-stocking the buttons after my Christmas chillaxing.
I had a huge box delivered, which is allllways exciting and i thought you might enjoy it too...
I always add extra buttons to my colour mixes so a customer will get unique and exclusive button mixes from my shops. It is part of the alchemical button mix process that i really enjoy.
http://bigfish.etsy.com/ is expanding slightly over 2011.
I don't want to BoMbArD the customer with an overwhelming choice of buttons but... i do want to start offering any mega Crafters / button obsessives a larger amount of buttons at a better price.
So, i have decided to introduce a WHOLESALE section to my BigFish store.
Individual button bags with 100 of each colour. Yum Yum!
Also a pack of 1,300 spotty / gingham buttons with 100 each of 13 colours.
I am not sure if i can financially stretch to hold this much stock. Running my business is a constant 'cash flow balance' (isn't any business?) but if they are not available to you directly, i can order them in very swiftly.
So.... i have already launched the SPOTTY wholesale button bags.
Soon to follow, will be these fantatsic Reels of Ribbons *swoon* i know.
I am a spoilt crafting brat and, quite frankly, i hate having random cuts of ribbon held in baskets - i want a REEL. So i can snip off ribbon whenever i feel like it. Secretly, i think you feel the same...?
Well, you can always indulge in a reel of just your favourite colour if you can "justify it". They will work out much cheaper than buying by the Metre, especially if you sell on your creations.
I think there will be a choice of 14 colours on these.

Whilst un-packing the delivery box, many button bags burst (yes, that is very messy and very annoying....) but look at the mix that i discovered! If they hadn't burst i would never have seen hooooowwww pretty these 3 colours look together!
This is called "Boy Girl Party" and is available as a 100g bag
Disco pink, Aqua, White and healthy scattering of spots and stars and hearts to compliment.
... i am exhausted after all this *news*
[deep breath and continue]
Gingham buttons will follow the spotty buttons and spotty ribbon reels, when i get a spare hour in the next week or so. Available in 5 new colours and ALSO in the wholesale 100 bags and 1,300 collection.
 SALE * SALE * SALE
There will be a mega 'one day only' FREE POSTAGE offer coming soon.
Keep your eyes on the blog as i will announce the date here: Maybe end of Jan / Begin of Feb. My delightful UK customers will enjoy the rare - once a year only - opportunity to shop for supplies and pay far less than the rest of the year.
Why would i do that? It is no scam people, the prices are not 'going up' to compensate or anything.
{disclaimer: some prices will rise 'soon-ish' to accomodateVAT increase only}
It allows me to move on older stock and boost cash flow... nothing more sinister. It is also a bit of a thankyou to blog readers and regulars for choosing to buy from me :) i appreciate it!
In bewteen book-keeping & button listing... i am trying to make things for http://paperfish.etsy.com/ i have had requests from some lovely ladies for more Lavender cushions and matching sets of things. I love you for asking but i cannot start any big sewing till February. The odd little thing will get listed though (like the hanging PinPuffs above) If you are willing to wait, i would be so happy to get sewing again.
And lastly.... HOW does Kirsty fit allll this into her life? (I hear you cry)
1. i bought a tracksuit... it is the beginning of the end for me. I have never owned one but it sure is good for running up to the 'School Run' and between the Studio and the Post Office.
2. i made this awesome chocolate cake... energy = choco burst = tasty = happy.  New Year diet might be out of the window.

I know all this is alot of *news* to digest right now. Normal flippant, meaningless, storytelling blogging, will resume soon.
xxx

*Important News* ...if you are coming to the MaKe Fair in Wolverton - this Sunday....

Ok, Ok, so it isn't soooo important but i wanted to tell you anyway.
I have had a few emails from lovely local ladies pre-ordering supplies for Delivery on SUNDAY at "MaKe" in Wolverton. This is more than OK with me. It saves on hassles and postage.

If you are coming to MaKe and want specific items from any of my online shops - please don't assume the whole range will be available on the day as that is far from possible.
I will have mixed Button Bags and some Shapes & Patterns but by no means will i be bringing the entire range. http://bigfish.etsy.com/ if there are items you want do let me know via email on Thursday or Friday this week. I am out at a Fair allll day tomorrow too, so don't fret if i don't reply directly.
The same applies to the Felt. http://fuzzyfish.etsy.com/ i will have some smaller packs of Acrylic Felt and maybe some Wool Felt but not all these rolls. So if you want half metres / metre packs, just drop me an email.
So... what will i be bringing??
Well, lots of the http://snowfish.etsy.com/ decorations but again, not all.
Some Lavender Cushions and textile bits but no NeedleBooks and no Bunting that is 'non Xmas'.
As it stands right now, i have sold out of Angels and Xmas Bunting.
I will see how tomorrows fair goes in terms of stock. I still have Thursday, Friday, Saturday to do any catch up sewing.
It may sound a bit 'drastic' this Blog Post, but really, i'd hate it for a local person to come along expecting a 'something' which isn't there.
We have limited table space at any fair and i have limited car space! and physical energy to LUG this lot everywhere i go.
""phew"" AND,,,,, saving the best news till last,,,,, there is *new* stripey ribbon going into the shops, yippee! AND i will have BARGAIN BASKETS at MaKe on Sunday - filled with de-stash fabrics that i cannot find a use for. And Older Design Brooches as PaperFish gets a mega MAKEOVER for 2011.
New fabrics from Japan and the US and big bags of bargain ribbons for wrapping and *new* lush Ribbon Bags too.
Gosh, i am tired out now!
See ya xxx

and now for some quilting...

I haven't quilted anything since i was about 13 years old.
I tried quilting when my mum bought me a book called "Happy Quilts"... i probably still have one or two hand-stitched hexagony 'shapes', half started and never finished, in a mothy box somewhere.
My mum wasn't a confident seamistress and didn't feel able to hand down what untrained knowledge she did posess, so, in turn, i never felt equipped with the confidence to continue. 20 years later... (can that be true?) and i am an entirely different being.... indeed, i am now a Fish.
I had it in my head last week that i was going to try some simple, 'Log Cabin'-esque, quilted pillows. And so that is what i spent last night and this morning, doing.
I made this large and simple quilted pillow for my cheeky little nephew. Actually he loves KNIGHTS! so i might work on a mini quilt for him (if i can source some good Knights fabric)

And below was the first quilted item i have finished - ever!: Needless to say, in true KirstyFish manner, i am now hooked and obsessed with quilted scatter cushions (lavender stuffed of course)

My first mini-pillow used strips of fabric 1.5" wide and i found it took me too long. You know what a short attention span i have. So i increased the width to 2" strips and it was a quicker process with just as much satisfaction.
Now, i am going through my family members thinking "what would my niece like?" ..... "it IS Mothers Day soon" - any excuse to make me some more.

All that yummy fabric.... *sigh*
This afternoon i ordered 50 metres of batting, 10yards of fabric and 2kg of lavender.
You know i don't exaggerate about 'how much' i get obsessed with things. You have seen the evidence right here!
Not being entirely frivolous, i decided to back the pillows in contrasting felt, as you *know* i have plenty of that stuff :)

And a few little details on the back to finish, gives them that special touch.
Because you love crafting too, you'll know how great my day was today... x
